CINCINNATI, OH -- Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Sam Hubbard has undergone significant offseason surgery to address a right ankle issue that was more severe than initially believed. The procedure included a complete deltoid reconstruction and a TightRope procedure to repair the ankle. The injury had been bothering Hubbard since training camp in 2023 but worsened as the season progressed.
In Week 9, during a victory over the Buffalo Bills, Hubbard aggravated the ankle injury and subsequently missed the next two games. It was only at the end of the season, during a fluoroscopy, that the full extent of the instability in his ankle was revealed. Despite the injury, Hubbard displayed resilience and continued to play through the pain, supporting the team in the absence of quarterback Joe Burrow.
Hubbard's performance during the first nine weeks of the season was commendable, as he ranked 28th in the NFL in pass rush win rate as an edge rusher. However, from Week 12 until the end of the season, his performance experienced a decline, ranking 49th out of 54 players in the same category. This decline could be attributed to the worsening ankle condition.
The Bengals organization, medical staff, and coaching staff have been supportive throughout Hubbard's recovery process. Hubbard himself expressed determination to regain his form and return to his previous level of play. He is excited to be back with the team for the upcoming offseason, where he will focus on rehabilitation and strengthening to ensure his ankle is fully healed and ready for the challenges ahead.
The Bengals will closely monitor Hubbard's progress and work alongside him to develop a rehabilitation plan that prioritizes his long-term health and performance. Throughout his career, Hubbard has proven to be a valuable asset to the team, and the Bengals are eager to see him return to full strength.
As the offseason progresses, Hubbard's recovery will be closely followed by fans and analysts alike, as his return to peak performance will undoubtedly bolster the Bengals' defensive line. The team remains optimistic about his future and is confident that with proper rehabilitation and support, Hubbard will once again become a force to be reckoned with on the field.
