PHILADELPHIA, PA -- In a move aimed at bolstering their offensive line depth, the Philadelphia Eagles have reached an agreement with former first-round draft pick Mekhi Becton. The 6-foot-7 offensive tackle is set to sign a one-year deal worth up to $5.5 million, pending a physical examination. Agents Alan Herman and Jared Fox confirmed the impending signing.
Encouraged by Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland, the signing of Becton comes as no surprise. Stoutland, known for his ability to maximize player talent, played a crucial role in developing Jordan Mailata, a former Australian rugby player with no prior football experience, into a starting left tackle.
Becton's tumultuous career has seen its fair share of ups and downs. Drafted 11th overall by the New York Jets in 2020, he displayed promise in his rookie year but subsequently battled through injury-ridden seasons. However, the 2023 season marked a comeback for Becton, showcasing his determination to prove himself once again.
The 2022 training camp proved to be a turning point for Becton as he suffered a reinjury of his right knee, resulting in a major surgery. The talented tackle placed blame on the coaching staff, citing the stress caused by switching him to the right tackle position, which exacerbated the strain on his surgically repaired right knee.
Undeterred by setbacks, Becton committed himself to a grueling physical transformation, shedding an impressive 50 pounds. This dedication paid off as he secured the starting right tackle position in the 2023 season. Eventually, Becton returned to his natural role as a left tackle, where he exhibited his undeniable potential. However, he did struggle with penalties, committing 12 infractions, and allowed 12.5 sacks throughout the season.
The New York Jets' decision to decline Becton's fifth-year option made him an unrestricted free agent, opening the door for the Philadelphia Eagles to pursue the talented lineman. With the departure of Jack Driscoll and Sua Opeta in free agency, the Eagles were in dire need of offensive line reinforcements. While there were talks of selecting a tackle early in the draft, the board did not align with their plans.
The impending signing of Mekhi Becton represents the Eagles' commitment to fortifying their offensive line. With Jeff Stoutland's guidance and the opportunity for redemption, Becton aims to revive his career and prove that he can overcome adversity to become a reliable force on the field.
As the deal awaits the completion of a physical examination, both Becton and the Eagles are optimistic about the potential partnership. The upcoming season will serve as a crucial chapter in Becton's journey, one that could define the trajectory of his NFL career.
