MIAMI, FL -- The Miami Dolphins have made a significant move in bolstering their pass-rushing unit by signing free agent Emmanuel Ogbah to a one-year deal worth up to $5 million. Ogbah, who previously spent four seasons with the Dolphins before being released in March, will reunite with the team for the upcoming season.
Negotiated by agents Drew Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha, the signing of Ogbah brings a familiar face back to the Miami defense. The veteran pass rusher had a productive tenure with the Dolphins, recording a combined 18 sacks in his first two seasons. Unfortunately, a triceps injury limited his playing time to just nine games in 2022. However, Ogbah bounced back strongly last season, registering 5.5 sacks and showcasing his disruptive presence on the field.
Throughout his career, Ogbah has proven himself as a formidable force, accumulating a total of 42.5 sacks, 8 forced fumbles, and 268 tackles. The Cleveland Browns selected him as a second-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, and he also had a stint with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019.
The Dolphins' decision to bring Ogbah back into the fold comes on the heels of linebacker Shaquil Barrett's unexpected retirement. Barrett, who had signed a one-year deal with Miami earlier in March, announced his departure from the game, leaving a void in the team's pass-rushing department.
With Barrett's retirement, rookies Chop Robinson and Mo Kamara have emerged as the Dolphins' top two healthy edge rushers. The young talents will now have the opportunity to learn from and compete with the experienced Ogbah, who brings a wealth of knowledge and skill to the team.
In other defensive news, the Dolphins have placed Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb, and Cameron Goode on the active/physically unable to perform list. This development further underscores the importance of Ogbah's signing in fortifying the team's pass rush and providing stability to the defensive line.
The deal was confirmed by Ogbah's agents, Drew Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha, who relayed the details to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The contract not only provides Ogbah with an opportunity to prove himself once again but also offers the Dolphins a proven pass-rushing presence to complement their defensive strategy.
As the 2022 NFL season unfolds, the Miami Dolphins will count on Emmanuel Ogbah's contributions to bolster their defense and apply pressure to opposing quarterbacks. Ogbah's return to the team signifies a shared vision to build a formidable unit and make an impact in the highly competitive AFC landscape.
