JACKSONVILLE, FL -- The Jacksonville Jaguars have made significant roster moves ahead of their upcoming rookie minicamp. The team has released wide receiver Zay Jones and kicker Joey Slye, while also welcoming veteran receiver Jarvis Landry to participate in the minicamp on a tryout basis. These moves come shortly after the Jaguars drafted LSU receiver Brian Thomas Jr. in the first round of the NFL draft, signaling their commitment to bolstering their receiving corps.
The release of Zay Jones, who signed a three-year contract with the Jaguars in March 2022, will result in significant salary cap savings for the team. By parting ways with Jones, the Jaguars will save $4.49 million against the salary cap. Jones, known for his reliable hands and route-running ability, recorded impressive numbers during his two seasons with the team, catching 116 passes for 1,144 yards and seven touchdowns. Despite missing eight games in 2023 due to a knee injury, Jones had a standout year in 2022, setting career highs in receptions (82) and receiving yards (823).
In an unexpected turn of events, the Jaguars have invited veteran receiver Jarvis Landry, a five-time Pro Bowl selection, to participate in their rookie minicamp on a tryout basis. Landry did not play in the NFL last season, and this opportunity with the Jaguars could potentially reignite his career. Known for his toughness, reliable hands, and ability to make tough catches, Landry's presence at the minicamp adds a level of experience and leadership to the young receiving corps.
Alongside the release of Zay Jones, the Jaguars have also bid farewell to kicker Joey Slye. Slye, who signed a one-year contract with the team in March, will be replaced by Arkansas kicker Cam Little, whom the Jaguars selected in the sixth round of the NFL draft. Little, known for his accuracy and strong leg, will compete for the starting kicker role during training camp.
In addition to these roster moves, the Jaguars have announced that they have agreed to terms with 13 undrafted free agents. These young prospects will have an opportunity to showcase their skills and compete for a spot on the team's final roster during training camp.
The Jaguars' recent roster changes reflect their commitment to building a competitive and dynamic team. With the addition of Brian Thomas Jr. in the draft, the potential resurgence of Jarvis Landry, and the arrival of undrafted free agents, the Jaguars are poised to enter the upcoming season with renewed optimism. As the team prepares for their rookie minicamp, fans eagerly anticipate the impact these new additions will have on the field.
