DALLAS, TX -- The Dallas Cowboys have yet to fill their running back need, but there are growing indications that a reunion with Ezekiel Elliott could be on the horizon. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones has expressed his interest in bringing back the star running back, although no official agreement has been confirmed. Recent discussions between the Cowboys, Elliott, and his agent suggest that both parties are open to the possibility of reuniting for the upcoming season.
Jones, known for his candidness, has publicly acknowledged his desire to see Elliott back in a Cowboys uniform. However, he has refrained from providing specific details about any potential deal. The Cowboys recently held a meeting with Elliott and his agent to explore the potential of working out a reunion agreement. Jones firmly believes that Elliott still possesses the skills necessary to be a starting-level running back in the league.
During the 2022 season, Elliott led the Cowboys' ground attack, amassing 642 rushing yards on 184 carries with three touchdowns. Additionally, he contributed in the passing game with 51 receptions for 313 yards and two touchdowns. Despite these numbers, it was a relatively down year for Elliott compared to previous seasons, as his 642 rushing yards marked a career low. In the final five games of the season, Elliott's production waned, failing to surpass 68 rushing yards and averaging over 3.1 yards per carry only once.
The departure of Tony Pollard, the team's leading rusher over the past two seasons, in free agency has left a void in the Cowboys' backfield. While the organization has made some moves to address the position, including re-signing Rico Dowdle and adding veteran Royce Freeman, Elliott's potential return would bring stability and familiarity to the running back room. With Deuce Vaughn, Malik Davis, and Snoop Conner also in the mix, the Cowboys have options, but Elliott's experience and track record place him firmly in consideration.
Throughout his tenure with the Cowboys from 2016 to 2022, Elliott has accumulated an impressive 8,262 rushing yards, ranking third in team history behind legends Emmitt Smith and Tony Dorsett. He showcased his elite abilities by leading the league in rushing in 2016 and 2018. However, Elliott has not surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing mark since the 2020 season. Despite this, he has received recognition for his performances, earning one All-Pro selection and three Pro Bowl nods.
Even if the Cowboys decide to add another running back through the upcoming draft, Elliott's potential return remains a possibility. Although he will turn 29 in July, Jerry Jones firmly believes that Elliott still possesses the skill set necessary to contribute at a high level for the Cowboys. As negotiations continue and offseason preparations unfold, the fate of Ezekiel Elliott and the Dallas Cowboys' running back situation hangs in the balance.
