SEATTLE, WA -- In a move that solidifies their secondary, the Seattle Seahawks have reached a three-year extension agreement with Pro Bowl safety Julian Love. The deal is worth up to $36 million, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.
Love, 26, was set to enter the final year of his two-year, $12 million contract with the Seahawks. However, the team recognized his contributions and decided to reward him with a well-deserved extension.
Impressively, Love intercepted four passes last season and earned his first Pro Bowl selection, despite sharing playing time at safety with former teammate Jamal Adams. His interceptions included a crucial one that set up a winning touchdown drive against the Cleveland Browns, as well as two interceptions in a victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Not only did Love showcase his ball-hawking skills, but he also made a significant impact as a tackler. He finished second on the team with 183 tackles, recorded 10 passes defensed, and forced two fumbles throughout the season. Love's versatility and leadership qualities were highly praised by Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald.
"On the field, he has elite poise, and that's something we're chasing... We have several guys that are like that ... but J-Love in particular, a guy that we'll be able to move around, change some different spots," said Macdonald. "You don't see that yet, but he'll be a guy that we'll be able to move around and utilize in a pretty sweet way."
The Seahawks' decision to extend Love comes after releasing both Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs earlier in the offseason. The team signed Rayshawn Jenkins to start alongside Love, forming a formidable safety duo.
Love wasted no time in demonstrating his commitment to the team, participating in the Seahawks' first practice of training camp. His presence and skill set will undoubtedly bolster the Seahawks' defense as they prepare for the upcoming season.
In addition to Love's extension, the Seahawks have been exploring options to strengthen their offensive line. Sources indicate that the team had a "great visit" with free agent offensive lineman Connor Williams. If a deal is reached, Williams, who previously played guard for the Dallas Cowboys, may transition to center for the Seahawks.
However, it is worth noting that Olu Oluwatimi has been ahead of Nick Harris in the Seahawks' center battle during training camp.
With Love's extension and the potential addition of Connor Williams, the Seahawks are making strategic moves to solidify their roster ahead of the new season. With approximately $8.5 million in salary cap space remaining, the team continues to navigate the offseason with precision and careful consideration.
As the Seahawks gear up for the upcoming season, fans eagerly await the opportunity to witness Julian Love's continued excellence on the field and the impact he will undoubtedly have on the team's success.
